Minimum coverage is the smallest number of people per role at which the location still runs normally. One person on the till at peak is already below the minimum: a queue and abandoned baskets. The target answers "how many are needed," not "who showed up today."

It's important to set it by role, not "for the shift as a whole." Kitchen, floor, and stockroom are closed by different headcounts, and each has its own minimum.

How to calculate a coverage target

The sequence is simple and repeatable.

  1. Break the shift into roles and areas. Till, floor, kitchen, stockroom - each has its own target.
  2. Assess load by day and hour. Weekdays and weekends, normal days and peaks differ.
  3. Set the minimum per role. How many people are needed to avoid queues and quality drops.
  4. Add a buffer for swaps. A minimum with no buffer collapses on the first absence.

What to do if coverage is below the minimum

A drop below the minimum is a gap to close in advance. The cost of understaffing is high: in retail, peak-hour shortfalls cut sales by about 8.56%. In a clinic or on a production line, the cost is higher still.
